Monday, May 12, 2003 Belhaven ¾ Celebrating 65 years of tradition, Riddick & Windley Hardware of Belhaven has been a household name around town since its inception back in 1938, by the store's founders, Captain Jack Riddick and Reginald Windley. The old store is still hanging on to many original traditions well into the new Millennium, going forward with as little modernization as necessary. Sure, there’s now a computerized check out system, but more important to the spirit of the store are the things you find from the days of old. The current owners, Corki and Guinn Leverett, and Ben Johnson (only twice removed from the original Riddick & Windley owners) strive daily to find new ways to celebrate the past with the flavor of "your old-fashioned hometown hardware store." From products to decor you will find evidence of how the store’s heritage is being preserved. On the store's 65th birthday you can still find many treasures you remember from the hardware store of your childhood. From the old fashioned hoop cheese on the counter, antique tools adorning the walls, original furniture used for product display and even authentic chairs from the Whittlers Club, to rocking chairs encircling an oversized old fashioned checkerboard, you can block out the Real World and while away some time enjoying unhurried shopping and visiting with your neighbors, the “way it used to be.” Riddick & Windley is a full line ACE hardware store, which also has a large Lawn & Garden department, full service Paint department, a Wine and Cheese Gourmet and Gift shop, the newly added Appliances Section from Tideland EMC, an Electronics department, and an Exclusive Authorized U.S. Cellular Agent. Anniversary celebrations at Riddick & Windley kick-off Saturday, May 17, with a U.S. Cellular Customer Appreciation Day. Refreshments will be served during the day, as well as free hot dogs from Farm Boys between 11:30am-1pm , live music by Darren Smith, door prizes and drawings for a cell phone and many other items, kids photos with Minnie and Mickey Mouse, an artist sketching portraits or caricatures, and a checker tournament for interested participants. There’s nostalgia-inducing fun to be had for all, and the staff at Riddick & Windley hopes everyone will stop in for a visit as Riddick & Windley turns 65. Celebrations will continue with special monthly events throughout the year. |
